A small community located in southern Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Shady Side is slowly becoming a popular destination among homeowners. Not only because of the plethora of housing opportunities, but its location to the Chesapeake Bay, DC and Annapolis are just other reasons why many people are calling this neighborhood home.

West of the Chesapeake Bay

Shady Side is belted by the Chesapeake Bay to the east, West River to the north, Deep Cove Creek to the south, and Muddy Creek Road to the west. The area is bombarded with water to the north and west. Deale immediately borders this neighborhood to the south, Lothian sits to the west and beyond the bay to the north is Beverly Beach and Mayo. Across the Chesapeake Bay to the east is Kent Island and Poplar Island. Beyond Mayo to the north is Selby-On-The-Bay and eventually Annapolis. Other neighborhoods within reach are West River, Harwood, Tracy’s Landing and Bristol.

Capt. Salem Avery House

During the 1790s, the area was known as the Great Swamp for unknown reasons. What is now Shady Side was once served by the side-wheel passenger steamer Emma Giles that operated from Baltimore, making up to five trips per week. The town features two listings on the National Register of Historic Places: The Lula G. Scott Community Center and Capt. Salem Avery House. The latter is a historic home that’s a two-story frame building overlooking West River and the Chesapeake Bay. The property consists of the main house with additions; three sheds formerly used as bath houses; and a modern boathouse that was built in 1993. The house is now a local history museum and is operated by the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society.

Route 468

Route 468 bisects the community and contains the majority of traffic flow throughout the neighborhood. Driving northbound on this road will lead residents to Selby-On-The-Bay where Route 2 is accessible. Route 2 crosses over the South River Sanctuary and is a direct shot to Annapolis and Parole. Route 256 is another important route in Shady Side. This road will take you to Deale where access roads will lead drivers to Route 4. It’s Route 4 in Bristol that will lead you closer to Washington, DC with some neighborhoods along the way like Upper Marlboro and Suitland-Silver Hill also reachable.

Waterfront Homes & Other Housing Choices

Since the area is surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay it is no surprise that waterfront homes are a popular and natural choice within the community. Most of the homes located along the water also provide private piers for boat owners, which can be employed as another form of transportation. You can find plenty of land for sale in this area, but the majority of listings are for single-family detached homes. Some popular architectural styles found in Shady Side include colonials, bungalows, cape cods, ranchers and split-levels.

Shady Side Restaurants & Bars

There are several local food markets and shops that provide quality products for the typical errand-run like Renno’s Quality Food Market, Christopher’s Fine Foods, and Evan’s Seafood to name a few. Brick House, Snug Harbor Inn, Shady’s and Swamp Circle Saloon are all restaurants and bars located in the area, but the most popular destination in Shady Side might be Driftwood Diner. This family-friendly spot is known for their amazing drink selections but dishes like the crab cake sandwich, chicken salad sandwich and their daily specials is what brings customers back for more.

Inn at Pirates Cove Restaurant is located in Galesville but is easily reachable from Shady Side. This upscale-casual seafood restaurant is on the water and offers a full bar and weekend entertainment in their lounge. Scheduled events are mostly local musical acts, but this spot also features drink specials and special contests on certain days. Skipper’s Pier Restaurant & Dock Bar is a wonderful nearby seafood restaurant located on Drum Point Road in Deale. This relaxed eatery on the water serves some local seafood and creative American fare, plus some homemade desserts. Other restaurants and bars located around the area include Thursday’s Steak & Crabhouse, Ledo Pizza and Happy Harbor Restaurant.

Shady Side Park

Shady Side Park is a terrific neighborhood park located on Parish Creek which is off from West River. The park features 3 lighted baseball fields, 3 multi-purposed fields used for soccer and football, 2 basketball courts, a playground and a cartop boat launch. Jack Creek Park is the only other neighborhood park worth mentioning and is located on Snug Harbor Road. This spot features a natural area which also comes with over 2 miles of walking trails, and a protected area for fishing on Jack Creek or the Chesapeake Bay. Since the park is located along the shoreline, you can expect to find private beaches here, although swimming is prohibited.

Water sports and activities are welcomed in the community, with the more popular destinations being West River and the Chesapeake Bay. The community provides plenty of marinas, boat launches, plus boat and equipment rentals for those looking into sports like kayaking, canoeing, paddle-boarding, fishing and more.

Shady Side is a wonderfully scenic community within close reach to major destinations like Annapolis and Washington, DC. The area also features some beautiful homes, locally owned restaurants, some terrific recreational parks, and not to mention a plethora of water sport opportunities.
