Lothian is an unincorporated community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Known for its close proximity to the Chesapeake Bay, this area also provides some beautiful detached homes and an array of recreational opportunities.

West of the Chesapeake Bay

Lothian is roughly bounded by the Patuxent River to the west, Bayard Road to the north, Solomons Island Road to the east and Jewell Road to the south. Upper Marlboro borders the area to the west, Harwood to the north, Shady Side and Deale to the east and Dunkirk, Friendship and Fairhaven to the south. The Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis and Mayo are also a short drive away.  

Historic St. James’ Parish

St. James Parish is a historic church located on Solomons Island Road in the hamlet of Tracys Landing and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church was officially established in 1692, when the Maryland General Assembly, acting on the orders of the Royal Governor of Maryland, enacted the Act of Establishment. The Act divided the Province of Maryland into 30 Anglican parishes. In 1695, the vestry ordered a church built on the present site in Lothian. There is also a cemetery on the property that includes what is believed to be the oldest dated grave in the state (1655).  

Getting Around Lothian

The area of Lothian is about 12 miles southwest of Annapolis, Maryland, 24 miles east of Washington, DC, and 31 miles south of Baltimore. A major north-south route is Route 2 which runs along the spine of the community. This route traveled northbound will take you directly into Annapolis while driving southbound can land you as far as Huntingtown. Route 4 is the area’s connection with some of the state’s busiest interstates. An east-west route, Route 4 can take you past Upper Marlboro and into Washington, DC. Other routes in the area include Route 255, 422, 408 and 258.

Single-Family Detached Houses

The housing available in Lothian mainly consist of single-family detached homes. The homes however can vary from large and luxurious colonials with beautifully large maintained yards, or a more compressed and homey feel surrounded by protective tree-lined coves. Because of the historic background of the area, also expect some houses to be more than 50 years old but with upgrades of course. Some popular architectural styles around the area include bungalows, cape cods and ramblers.

Dining, Shopping, and Entertainment

Since the area is mainly residential, expect very little options for entertainment, shopping and fine-dining. There are a couple of restaurants within Lothian like Countryside and Carry Out and Duffy’s III, but for a wider and diverse selection you will need to travel outside the community.

Upper Marlboro sits west of the community, just past the Patuxent River. Located near Route 4, you can find plenty of popular establishments and some delicious restaurants. Stores located here include Giant, Food Lion, The Home Depot and Dutch Village Farmers Market. Caribbean Flava sits next door to the market as they are both located at the Marlboro Village Shopping Center on Brown Station Road. This fabulous restaurant offers some delicious Caribbean dishes like the flavorfully packed tilapia fish and the jerk and curry chicken. They are also known for their side dishes like collard greens, the macaroni & cheese and spinach. Situated between Schoolhouse Pond and Depot Pond is Olde Towne Inn. A much closer option than Caribbean Flava, this charming seafood restaurant has a folksy feel and serves up Chef Donnell Long’s twist on classic American dishes.

To the east of Lothian is Deale, where you can find some amazing seafood and waterfront restaurants. Some great destinations in this area are Skipper’s Pier Restaurant & Dock Bar, South County Cafe and Ledo Pizza.

Adventure Bound & Old South Country Club

The Washington, DC location of the Adventure Bound Camping Resorts chain is located near the Patuxent River on Sands Road. This wonderful camping resort features a 36-foot water slide and a splashdown area. There are fun activities for persons of all ages. Children can participate in many planned activities and special events like an Arts & Crafts workshop and Candy Bar Bingo. Parents can also freely enjoy their vacation, worry free, as their children are supervised by staff members. During the summer days, check out the relaxing pool and if you have dogs then let your pups tire themselves at the dog park. Adventure Bound also features a mini-golf course, wonderful trails, cabin and RV rentals and primitive sites available while you camp.

Old South Country Club is the premier private Country Club in the Washington, DC, Virginia, and the Maryland area. Weddings and Banquets are regular here, as the catering service is also among the options. Members can enjoy a quality golf course that will challenge their skills, plenty of tennis courts, a swimming pool and dining services. The Parris N. Glendening Nature Preserve, Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, Wooton’s Landing Wetland Park and Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary are other green spaces around the area.

Lothian is situated west of the Chesapeake Bay and although it doesn’t feature many establishments or nightlife, nearby destinations offer plenty of choices. Its proximity to Upper Marlboro and plenty of recreational options are other reasons why many come to Lothian.
