Known for being the center of population of the state of Maryland, the Jessup community features affordable housing and direct access to nearby towns such as Severn, Elkridge and Columbia.

East of Columbia

Jessup is bounded by Waterloo Road and the railroad tracks to the west, Montevideo Road to the north, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway to the east, and its intersection with Route 32 comprises the most southern end of the area. Savage borders the community to the west, Columbia and Elkridge to the north, Hanover to the east, and Fort Meade to the south. Severn, Laurel and Odenton are also a short drive away.

Named for Jonathan Jessup

The name of the area is generally attributed to Jonathan Jessup, a civil engineer who worked on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The name Pierceland appeared in early maps, but the post-civil war name more commonly given was Jessup’s Cut or Jessop’s Cut. The name was shortened in 1863. It wasn’t until the mid 20th-century when the town was shortened to “Jessup”. The area contains many warehouse delivery facilities. Due to its geographically central location in the state, Jessup is also home to the Maryland Food Center, Spurrier’s Tavern and the Brockbridge Correctional Facility.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

For the area of Jessup, this wonderfully comedic movie title translates the perfect amount of public transportation available in the community. BWI—or Baltimore-Washington International Airport—is northeast of the community and features direct rail service. The Jessup stop on the Camden Line of the MARC Train system sits off Route 175, and provides commuter rail service to Baltimore and Washington, DC. As for automobiles, drivers can travel northbound on Route 295 or I-95 to reach downtown Baltimore. Route 1 is another north-south road that if traveled southbound will take you into Washington, DC.

The area is also somewhat affordable considering its terrific location to Arundel Mills, BWI and Columbia. Settings can be as varied as urban life to more secluded environments. This remarkable dinner theater includes jousting, horsemanship, and falconry plus a 4-course, utensil-free meal served in a castle-like space. Maryland Live! Casino is a great entertainment option within Arundel Mills. This 24/7 destination features thousands of slot machines and electronic table games in classic environs. Both of these wonderful facilities are considered some of the best places in Jessup for private events.
